BRANCH & ANIMAL UPDATESFebruary saw the Branch taking in a young female cat (Bella) and her four two day old kittens along with three other females from the same household. The three females were Bella’s kittens from last year. They were all in reasonably good condition apart from needing thoroughly de-fleaing! Bella was reserved very quickly and as soon as the kittens were old enough she was neutered and went to her new home where she has become a much loved pet. All of the kittens were re-homed to lovely new families. Unfortunately two of the young females are still with us. They really need to be re-homed, both are timid but are very affectionate. (See animals for re-homing for further details). Early March I had a call from a local vet to say they had a cat in that was microchipped and had been originally registered by the Branch. Monty was re-homed by the Branch back in October 2005. Monty came back into us, he had been well cared for and was a really affectionate lovely cat. Petlog, the Branch and our local Inspector all tried to contact his owners but to no avail. Finally in early May, the owners came forward and he was reunited the same day. They were delighted to see him and it turned out he had been missing since January. Vets4Pets Harrogate ran the Vaccine for Life campaign during February/March this year, for every policy sold, money was donated to the Branch. I’m delighted to say that they raised £326. We really appreciate the support they give the Branch. The Golf day held at Ferrensby raised £860 and a good time was had by all who attended. Its great that this event has now become an annual fundraiser and plans are already in place for next year’s event. A coffee morning at Wetherby raised £212 and Morrisons Wetherby collection £245. A recent quiz and curry night at the Smiths Arms, Beckwithshaw, raised over £290. A fun and entertaining evening was had by all who attended.
Needing homes Fudge is aged about 3 years old, he came into us as a very well fed stray a few weeks ago. He has very unusual colouring, creamy fur tinged with ginger and lovely blue eyes. He is very timid but once you gain his trust he is an absolute delight wanting to be stroked and petted. Fudge needs to go to a home where he will get lots of time and attention.
Sooty and Blackie have been with us for some time now, they are aged 15 months, they are neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. Both are timid but very affectionate, they need homes where they will be loved and will make the most wonderful loving pets. xxxxxx

The vouchers can only be used at Vets4Pets Harrogate and are not transferable
Lottery Updates March 2010 1st Stuart Percival (63) 2nd Jenny Haigh (60) April 2010 1st Craig Johnson (17) 2nd Mrs Preston (39) Lungworm is your dog at risk? Has your dog ever eaten slugs, snails or frogs, either on purpose or by accident……and would you know? Are foxes, slugs and snails present where you live or walk your dog? If the answer is yes to any of the above questions then your dog could be at risk from a potentially life threatening lungworm called Angiostrongylus Vasorium which is spread by slugs, snails and occasionally frogs. Foxes can also become infected and then they play a role in the spread of infection. Lungworm is a life threatening disease and with more cases being reported it’s a problem that is on the increase. The disease which is caused by a type of lungworm is becoming more widespread. The reason is unknown but more cases have been diagnosed throughout the UK recently. For dogs to become infected they have to eat infective larvae. These may be present in slugs, snails and possibly frogs. Some dogs might not eat slugs or snails on purpose but may do by accident when a slug or snail falls into a water bowl. Diagnosis and Treatment There are several symptoms that could be presented. Breathing problems or coughing Poor blood clotting leading to excessive bleeding from minor wounds, nose bleeds, bleeding into the eye and anaemia. Behavioural changes, seizures (fits) spinal pain, weight loss, loss of appetite, vomiting and diarrhoea. If you notice any of the symptoms it is important that you talk to your vet as soon as possible. Treating Lungworm. Your vet can prescribe an innovative monthly applied spot-on treatment. This will effectively kill the lungworm responsible for the disease as well as a range of other parasites. Branch AGM – Wednesday 9th June 2010 Please do come along and support the AGM even if you are not a member of the National Society. Refreshments are provided and it is a good opportunity to hear what the Branch has been up to and meet members of the committee. We really would like as much support as possible and look forward to your company. As always I would just like to extend my thanks to everyone who helps the Branch in whatever capacity .
